Event Information

Join us for the 3rd Annual Pierpont Veterans 5k (formerly Making Connections 5k) as we raise more money to support Veterans’ Education, Services and Scholarships. We offer a challenging course, a festive atmosphere, excellent post-race refreshments, and generous sponsors. So come out, support a great cause, and challenge yourself and your friends to “Climb the Connector” in one of the toughest 5k’s anywhere!

All events will take place at Veterans' Square Plaza, 320 Adams Street in Downtown Fairmont.

Thursday, March 28th:
5:00 pm - Registration and Packet Pick-Up
6:00 pm - Registration Closes
6:15 pm - Kids' K Race Begins
6:20 pm - Mascot Invitational
6:30 pm - 5k and 2 Mile Races Begin
7:15 pm - Post-Race Reception & Awards

Course Description

Climb the Connector
Our challenging 3.1 mile, out and back, course begins at Veterans’ Square (corner of Adams and Madison Streets). After 1 block up Adams Street, runners turn left onto Jefferson Street, crossing the Mollohan Bridge. At Merchant Street all racers start heading sharply uphill on the recreation/bike path paralleling the “Gateway Connector.” A municipal park is the site of the 1 mile mark. This is where walkers will turn around and runners will wish they were walkers! Grab a drink at the water/aid station as you enter the steepest part of the course - the final climb toward WaveTec Park and Fairmont’s Vietnam War and Korean War (under construction) Memorials. The course loops at the top of the hill, returning runners back down along the same path. Make sure you save enough energy for the final climb before you turn toward the finish on the Veterans’ Square Plaza.

Kids' K (10 & under)

Kids’ K participants will start at Veterans’ Square and run to the Court House, approximately 200 yards, then return to the finish. All runners will receive a “#1” race bib, Pierpont Veterans 5k race shirt, and commemorative finisher’s medallion. Registration is FREE! Race begins at 6:15 pm.
Additional children's activities will be available throughout the main events.

Veterans Challenge

New this year is the inaugural Veterans Challenge, featuring a special category and prizes for our the top Veteran and Active Duty runners. We are also offering FREE REGISTRATION for Veterans and Active Duty Military Personnel for both the 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk!

Mascot Invitational

Introducing the first annual Mascot Invitational! Pierpont invites all area schools and businesses to join in a fun, spirited, and memorable race to take place immediately following the Kids K.

Awards

Commemorative awards will be presented to the top overall men’s and women’s finishers in the Making Connections 5k, as well as the top 2 finishers in each division. All participants pre-registered by March 20th are guaranteed a “Pierpont Veterans 5k” race shirt. All athletes are also entitled to postrace refreshments and eligible for door-prizes to be awarded after the event.

Beat the President.

Back by popular demand! All runners have the chance to “Beat the President.” Any runner who can finish ahead of Pierpont President, Dr. Doreen Larson, will take home a special gift donated by one of our sponsors. Just a warning, Doreen is an avid runner who is used to winning. So train hard – and catch her if you can!!!

FROM I-79:
Take Exit 132 (South Fairmont).
At the end of the exit ramp, turn left.
At the next light (Dan Cava Toyota on corner) turn onto NASA Blvd.
Proceed on NASA Blvd to the WV High Technology Park.
Parking adjacent to start / finish area.
